Pregnancy and DHA

Is DHA safe during Pregnancy?

The nutritional elements that are considered during the gestational state of a woman are critical to the development of the fetus as well as the mother’s health. DHA plays a crucial role in the development of the fetus, particularly in the formation of cerebral, optic and nervous systems and is most important in the final trimester where accelerated brain development is present. By improving the amount of DHA levels in the body during gestation, the mother will nurse significantly and improve the fetal condition to optimize developmental results like motor skills, attention span and eye-hand synapse. DHA is also essential to maternal health and is suggestion as a supplement during gestation to promote a balanced mental state.

DHA is an important nutrient for women, particularly during gestation because of the structural benefits that it provides for cognition and brain development for the fetus. Omega 3 is a fat that provides so many essential benefits to the body but cannot be produced in the body. This statement was relayed by a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association in the effort to promote understanding of the importance of DHA.

Adults generally get their DHA from nutrition while the baby will receive the DHA supplement via the utero from the fat it gets while growing in the womb. Once the baby is born it receives DHA through breast feeding or by artificial nutrition in the form of baby formulas supplemented with DHA. It is essential that a gestating mother consumes DHA so that her reserves don’t get depleted and even through her breastfeeding stage.
